In an interdependent and interconnected world, countries’ ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are not only determined by domestic efforts, but also by actions taken in and by other countries. Such spillover effects need to be measured and understood to achieve the SDGs.

On July 15, 2019, at the Harvard Club of New York, the SDSN and GIZ jointly hosted an event on “The Role of Spillover Effects in SDG Implementation”.
The event featured started with a keynote speech by Dr. Ingolf Dietrich, Commissioner for the SDGs at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany, and Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, special advisor on sustainable development to the United Nations Secretary General.
Dr. Guido Schmidt-Traub, Executive Director of the SDSN, presented SDG spillover effects as a new branch of work of the SDSN and GIZ. Followed by a panel discussion by:
- Annika Lindblom (Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development)
- Erik Giercksky (UN Global Compact)
- Seema Joshi (Amnesty International)
- Jorge Gómez-Paredes (SDSN Andes)
This new line of work is also a focus of the SDSN Andes secretariat (see projects).
